Communication and language underpin all other areas of development, particularly Reading and Writing. Our strong emphasis on developing confident and articulate communication skills are apparent through all class sessions.
Our communication curriculum driver ensures that this is embedded within our curriculum.
In Nursery there is a focus on a word of the week | Children are taught how to speak in a range of differnt situations - from whole class to skills to aid conversation | Communication friendly spaces are evident in the outdoor environment | EAL is supported through careful assessment and identification of next steps | Children participate in presentations and shows to parents to practice their public speaking |
New vocabulary is taught through high quality topic texts | Topic text words are highlighted and referred to throughout learning | When children join the school in EYFS, their language aquisition is assessed | Pupils are referred to speech and language therapy which is supported in school | Interventions support pupils to catch up and include talking to learn and talking tables |
Communication is supported through visual cues and PECs for non-verbal learners | Interactions in EYFS focus upon communication and language skills | Positive speaking and listening skills are modelled | Attention and listening skills underpin all learning behaviours |
